Caledonia makes life tough for Rangers

Kareem Joseph netted his second goal of the season and it came at the right time leading third positioned Neal and Massy Caledonia AIA to a 1-0 win against Lucozade Sport Big Six seekers St Ann’s Rangers on Thursday night at the Larry Gomes Stadium.

Rangers remain in sixth position with 34 points, but are only ahead of seventh positioned United Petrotrin on goals difference as both teams hold the same amount of points at the end of 26 games.

Ironically, both Rangers and Petrotrin will meet in the final Round Three match on Saturday in a virtual final as the winner of that match will go through to the Big Six.

The match will be played at the Oilmen’s favoured home turf at the Palo Seco Recreation Ground with a 4pm kickoff.

A victory against Caledonia would have surely secured Rangers a Big Six spot with one Round Three Match remaining.

However Kareem Joseph, better known for his ball winning skills in defence netted a 34th minute item, a goal that proved the match winner pumping to Stallions to 42 points, 16 points shy of leaders CLICO San Juan Jabloteh and 13 behind second positioned W Connection—both in winners row after Thursday’s Round Three Match Day Eight fixtures.

Rangers coming off a 3-0 against Jabloteh on Tuesday showed early promise with Shane Rennie pulling his trigger just wide of Michael Woods’ right upright from above the area in the 5th minute.

Teammate Keyon Edwards had two bites on goal in the 15th minute with his first blocked out by Howard Lowe and his second over bar from inside the area after a poor cross by Shem McFarlane fell in his path.

Shem Mc Farlane also had a try of his own in the 24th minute holding off his marker Brion Baker before taking his time to let off a shot which flew inches over Woods’ crossbar.

The came the Kareem Joseph item, punching the Stallions ahead in the 34th minute after picking up a long pass forward rounded goalkeeper Shane Mattis before slotting the ball into an open net with little pressure by defender Joseph Peters, whose desperate run back was in vain.

Caledonia coach Jerry Moe coming off a 2-1 defeat against Defence Force on Tuesday wasn’t about to let his lead slip a second time and introduced defender Sheldon Emmanuel at the expense Akim Armstrong following the break.

Caledonia failed to double their advantage in the 58th minute when Kendall Velox failed to beat goalkeeper Granger after a blistering run by Hayden Tinto who crossed the ball low to find Velox at far side but the Vincentian’s first time effort was foiled on the second grab by the Jamaican goalie.

Moe then replaced the legs of hayden Tinto up front with the legs of Conrod Smith for a rejuvenated offence.

Rangers’ midfielder Coneal Thomas had a crack at goal but his effort bounced off goalkeeper Woods before the Caledonia goalie would gather just around the hour mark.

Keyon Edwards had an even better opportunity later on blasting from inside the area after Woods was beaten by Christon Thomas’ cross only to see his well taken effort cleared off by defender Howard Lowe who was in sterling form for Caledonia.

Goal scorer Kareem Joseph had a chance of getting to his double and giving his team a two goal advantage inside the closing 15 minutes but miscued inside the area after a neat exchange of passes between himself and substitute Conrod Smith.

Coach Anthony Streete’s offensive second half introductions Devon Modeste and Abiola Clarence on for Shem Mc Farlane and Joseph Peters had little impact on giving the St Ann’s based team a equalizing moment.

Substitute Devon Modeste may have gotten closest having a shot on goal in the dying stages but Woods continued his brilliant night to keep the shot out.

Now Rangers will have to wait until Saturday against the 2005 Lucozade Sport Big Six champions United Petrotrin to play their hearts out for a spot in the final six.
