Army edge Rangers in League opener

Army edge Rangers in League openerDevorn Jorsling and Richard Roy—two of the most feared strikers in the Digicel Pro League—were both on target in Friday's 2012-2013 opener as Defence Force blanked St. Ann's Rangers 2-1.

It was in a space of three minutes at the Hasely Crawford Stadium that the Soldiers found the back of the net twice in the first match of a Round One Match Day One double header.

Against the run of play Jorsling had a simple tap in at the back post in the 32nd minute after goalkeeper Zane Coker dived to his left palming away a low Aklie Edwards cross, gifting the Defence Force striker his first.

Less than a minute later, Coker who raced off his line to stop a powerful run by Kevon Carter went from hero to zero when he pulled Ross Russell Jr. inside the area in an attempt recover on the loose ball.

Referee Chevon Wallace was left with no other choice but to point to the spot.

Roy stepped up in the 35th minute and doubled the Soldiers’ advantage, 2-0, by guiding his low penalty kick to the left of Coker.

Prior to the Defence Force goals, it was Rangers that enjoyed opening play with makeshift wingback Devon Modeste hitting overbar in the 5th minute; Hector Sam wide in the 19th minute and Jason Marcano heading wide from a corner in the 23rd minute.

Midfielder Mikhail Awai also joined in on the fun a minute later, testing his luck from distance. However he failed to force work out of goalkeeper Kevin Graham.

But Graham was forced into action in the 65th minute and did so superbly fisting away a powerful free-kick by Elijah Belgrave from outside the area which found its way past the wall.

Graham was later beaten by class strike, when in the 73rd minute Sam pulled back a goal for Rangers by receiving a Belgrave pass on the right of the area and blasting a shot past the Defence Force custodian and into the fat netting for a 2-1 score.

Other than a header by midfielder Jerwyn Balthazar early in the second half which crashed onto the crossbar, the Soldiers found difficulties penetrating the Rangers defense again.
