Defending champion DIRECTV W Connection has wedged itself back into the title race of the 2012-2013 Digicel Pro League Championship following back to back wins this week.
Joevin Jones, scorer of the lone item in a 1-0 win against cross-town rivals Central FC at the Ato Boldon Stadium on Wednesday, improved his performance on Friday at the same Couva venue by scoring a hat-trick in a 5-2 comeback win over Police FC.
Connection boosted with 25 points, sits one point behind second positioned Caledonia AIA (26 points) who takes on St. Ann’s Rangers from 5pm at the Marvin Lee Stadium on Saturday, and 8 points away from leaders Defence Force who dropped points against bottom of the table T&TEC FC in a 1-1 draw in the first match on Friday.
Police opened the scoring with a shock item just 6 minutes into the match when from corner on the right, Jameel Perry slammed home from close range for a 1-0 advantage.
But Connection leveled the scores 1-1 by the 18th minute with striker Hashim Arcia hitting the inside of the upright before the ball nestled into the opposite side beating goalkeeper Jamaal Francois against the run of play.
Arcia then provided Connection’s second two minutes later when he picked up on his rebound which crashed off the upright and quickly found teammate Andrei Pacheco who packed in a strike past the Police goalie for a 2-0 cushion.
Jones then improved the Connection score, 3-1, by executing brilliance in caressing a perfect Stefano Rijssel cross over an advancing Francois before confidently tapping into an open net in the 37th minute.
A minute later Police goalscorer, Perry (J) hooked a Keon Quow cross inches wide in an excellent scoring opportunity for the Lawmen. But Jones executed another piece of fine shooting five minutes before the break for a more than comfortable 4-1 score-line.
The left-back—converted into attacking midfielder was serviced by another perfect Rijssel cross, this time low, to blast past a hapless Francois.
Led by telling runs from Jones and Rijssel, Connection dominated the second period but conceded another item after the ‘Lawmen’ were awarded a freekick some 24 yards out in the 76th minute.
Defender Elijah Belgrave known for his powerful kicks, stepped up and let off a rocket that Connection goalkeeper Alejandro Figueroa had very little chance against into the upper right corner reducing the deficit 2-4.
But Jones quickly erased the memory of Belgrave’s strike by executing a beautiful curling left footed free-kick to beat Francis at first post for a 5-2 score after Rijssel brought down outside the area.
Jones had a late opportunity to grab a fourth in the 89th minute but volleyed a substitute Neil Benjamin cross wide at the back post.
Needless to say, Jones with the support of Surinamese forward Rijssel had an excellent day at the office.
