Suriname duo Walkin Boyz and Inter Moengotapoe made giants step towards qualifying for the second round of the Caribbean Football Union Club Championship with away first leg victories on Sunday. Playing at the Mindoo Phillip Park, Castries St Lucia, Walking Boys, the Suriname league champions strolled to a 3–0 shut out of Northern United All Stars ahead of Sunday’s second-leg match at home.

Brazilian midfielder Ailton opened the scoring for Walking Boyz in the 32nd minute before Surinamese defenders, Rinaldo Milton Lupson (45th) and Marlon Wendel Felter (49th) added the other within four minutes of each. The winner of the tie between Walking Boyz and All Stars will meet defending CFU Club Champions, Puerto Rico Islanders in the second round home-and-away series for a spot in the semifinals to be contested in T&T next month.

Inter had to work much harder for its crucial victory on the road with Jungelo Brunswijk netting an 88th minute winner at the Mackenzie Sports Complex Ground, Linden, Guyana. The winner of the Milerock/Inter Moengotapoe tie will face the winner of the series between T&T Pro League champions, Defence Force and Bermudan champions, Dandy Town Hornets. Defence Force only need a draw in Saturday’s second-leg at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella from 4.30 pm after earning a 1–1 draw on Thursday last in the away leg.

Defence Force has won the CFU Club title twice in club history, in 1985 and 1987 while it has captured the Concacaf Champions League crown, once in 1985 with a 2–1 home-and-away aggregate win over Honduran club, CD Olimpia in the final.

They also reached the final in 1987 and 1988 but lost out to Club America of Mexico (3–1) and Olimpia (4–0) respectively, both on aggregate. The second round is scheduled for the weeks of April 12–14 and April 22–24, while semifinal will take place in T&T from May 25 with the final and third-place game set for four days later. The semifinal winners and third placed club will qualify for the 2011-2012 Concacaf  Champions League. Puerto Rico has qualified each season of the Champions League’s three-year existence.
