David happy with extra match

David happy with extra matchShurland David, coach of DIRECTV North East Stars says he was more than happy for the workout from FC SouthEnd in their Digicel Pro Bowl qualifier at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar on Saturday night.

Stars won 2-0 on first-half goals from Anthony Wolfe and St Vincent and The Grenadines veteran Kendall Velox to secure its place the quarterfinal round.

The win was also the third straight Knockout tournament victory for Stars over South End this season after triumphs in the Lucozade Sports Goal Shield (3-0) and First Citizens Cup (2-1)--both qualifiers as well.
Speaking after the win, David said, “The chance to play the qualifier provided us with a chance to shake off some rustiness and get in an extra-match.

“Coming out of the carnival season most of the teams would be rusty apart from Defence Force and Caledonia AIA, who were both involved in Caribbean Football Union Club Championship, so we were happy with the work-out.

“It provided us a great test to get back into competition mood as we are now ready for the tougher part of the tournament, where any team can triumph on a given day.”
During Friday’s win, Wolfe was also shown two yellow cards.

Looking ahead to the last-eight match-ups, David said he was confident his team can cope with his absence if he is indeed suspended.

He added, “I believe all the cards picked up in the qualifiers will be wiped out, but if this is not the case I am confident that we have enough players who can step in fill his void.

“They may not have the same ability and aggression, but in their own way they will be able to get the job done.”

To the delight of David and Wolfe, cards obtained in the qualifying round will not roll over hence Anthony Wolfe is eligible for play in the quarterfinal round.

Stars are in search of a fourth finals appearance this season and second title having captured the Lucozade Sport Goal Shield while they were runner-up in the T&T Football Federation FA Trophy and Toyota Classic finals.
