Digicel Pro Bowl qualifier: Stars beat SouthEnd again

Digicel Pro Bowl qualifier: Stars beat SouthEnd againDIRECTV North East Stars secured its path for maybe another knockout Final this season when it defeated FC SouthEnd 2-0 on Saturday night at the Larry Gomes Stadium in the second qualifier of the 2010-2011 Digicel Pro Bowl.

It was the third knockout qualifier meeting by Stars and SouthEnd this season, with the Shurland David coached Sangre Grande outfit enjoying a one hundred percent record.

The Lucozade Sport Goal Shield winners and FA Trophy and Toyota Classic Finalist, North East Stars, enjoyed first half goals by Anthony Wolfe and Kendall Velox to end FC SouthEnd’s 2010-2011 season on Saturday.

The Grande club joins Defence Force, Caledonia AIA, Joe Public, W Connection, Ma Pau SC, San Juan Jabloteh and Police FC in the Digicel Pro Bowl quarterfinal round which kicks off on Friday 18 March.

Stars looked the better from the beginning making aware their intentions three minutes into the match when Sean Fraser hammered a shot wide of the SouthEnd upright after he was played inside the area by Kaydion Gabriel.

Gabriel then won the Stars a penalty in the 12th minute when he was pulled down inside the area by Eddison Smart after bursting inside the area following a neat exchange of passes between himself and Fraser.

And the Stars took the 1-0 lead with Anthony Wolfe’s confident strike from the spot slotting his shot inside the right upright to beat goalkeeper Aquelius Sylvester.

Midfielder Kendall velox then cushioned the Stars 2-0 in the 45th minute as goalkeeper Sylvester only managed glove to the ball sending it into the left netting.

The play was started by Sylvester’s poor clearance which fell to Fraser, and the Jamaican wasted no time sending the ball back into the area and Gabriel(who was offside) left the play Velox.

In the 55th minute the hardworking Fraser wasted a goal-scoring opportunity when he directed Wolfe’s cross wide of an exposed net.

North East Stars ended the match short a player after Anthony Wolfe received two yellow cards from referee Michael Ragoonath in the 85th minute—his first for a foul and the other for what seemed dissent.

But that didn’t stop the Stars. In the 90th minute substitute Errol McFarlane forced a fingertip save from Sylvester when he headed Fraser’s cross from the left.
