Appealing clashes revealed at Digicel Pro Bowl launch

Digicel Pro Bowl launch 2010-2011Defending Digicel Pro Bowl champions Joe Public will begin its defence on Friday 18 March from 6pm at the Marvin Lee Stadium against Police FC in the quarterfinal round.

This was revealed on Thursday afternoon during the official launch of the 2010-2011 season Digicel Pro Bowl held at the President’s Box of the Queens Park Oval, Port of Spain.

TT Pro League CEO Dexter Skeene supervised the random draw which created quite a number of raised eyebrows with Digicel Pro League Champions Defence Force against former Pro Bowl winners San Juan Jabloteh in Group B and recently crowned Toyota Classic champs Ma Pau SC against Digicel Pro League runners-up Caledonia AIA in Group A.

Skeene labeled the quarterfinal clashes as mouthwatering.

While DIRECTV North East Stars, a three-time knockout finalist this season, found themselves in Group B against W Connection, a club in relentless hunt of its first Pro Bowl title.

“The guys have been training hard for this one,” said Joe Public defender Carlyle Mitchell returning from injury.

Mitchell missed the recently concluded Toyota Classic but is expected to captain his side against Police. He is one of the few surviving players of the 2009 five-title winning team.

He has a lot of confidence in his somewhat short of experience side adding, “It’s the last trophy we have to try and defend and will be giving it our best.

“We have a few experienced guys like Andre Toussaint, Hayden Tinto, Marvin Phillip, Kareem Young and myself and some good young players working very hard. The coach has been doing his work and it’s not for us to go out and do it,” said the Joe Public defender.

Police secured its place in the quarterfinal round with an impressive 4-0 win over St. Ann’s Rangers in the first of two qualifiers last weekend.

Mitchell continued, “We are not taking anything for granted from Police because they are a good team and anything can happen in the game of football.

This season Joe Public captured the First Citizens Cup but failed to defend the League Championship, FA Trophy and Toyota Classic.

The Pro Bowl is the final tournament of the 2010-2011 Pro League calendar and is widely favoured as top knockout tournament with a “winner takes all” prize-money payout of $100,000.00 backed by Digicel who took over sponsorship in 2009.

Penny Gomez, Communications Manager Digicel(Trinidad and Tobago) Limited declared the company's ongoing pledge to support the competition stating: “Digicel is proud to partner with the TT Pro League, an organization that is clearly dedicated to elevating and advancing football while providing opportunities for local players to develop themselves and their talents on a national level.”

Skeene expressed a lot of gratitude towards Digicel, who is also the main sponsor of the Digicel Pro League.

During his speech, the Pro League CEO said, “I express on behalf of the TT Pro League I wish to share profound thanks and gratitude to Digicel for sharing the dream and understanding the purpose and mission of the TT Pro League, not only its football journey but also the far bigger and wider picture.”

During her opening remarks Gomez reminded, “As the region's biggest sponsor of football, Digicel remains thoroughly committed to the development of football in Latin America and the Caribbean.

“Over the years we have continued our drive to support the vast amounts of talent on display throughout Trinidad and Tobago and the rest of the region. To this end, Digicel has maintained its sponsorship of the Digicel Caribbean Championships, the COPA de Naciones Digicel in Central America, the Tobago Football League and fourteen(14) national football teams throughout the region and of course the TT Pro League.”
