Digicel Pro Bowl qualifier: Police slams 4-0 win against Rangers

Digicel Pro Bowl qualifier: Police slams 4-0 win against RangersPolice FC qualified for the 2010-2011 Digicel Pro Bowl with a very impressive 4-0 win over St. Ann’s Rangers on Saturday night at the Larry Gomes Stadium in the first of two qualifiers.

Akeem Marshall fired the Lawmen ahead in the 35th minute while second half goals by Sayid Freitas, Noel Williams and Jason Boodram ended Rangers’ 2010-2011 season in a disappointing fashion.

Meantime Police joins Defence Force, Caledonia AIA, Joe Public, W Connection, Ma Pau SC and San Juan Jabloteh in the Digicel Pro Bowl quarterfinal round which kicks off on Friday 18 March.

DIRECTV North East Stars also joins the quarterfinal cast having defeated FC SouthEnd 2-0 in the second qualifier at the Malabar venue with first half goals by Anthony Wolfe(penalty) and Kendall Velox.

Police looked the part from early on when midfielder Todd Ryan blasted in a low effort from inside the area 16 minutes into the match. Although it was saved by goalkeeper Fortunato Valcourt who was alert and well positioned to match the powerful shot with a blockout, it was a sign of what was too follow.

Rangers then conceded the opening item Freitas’ brilliant through-ball to find Akeem Marshall was met perfectly and the Police forward calmly placed the ball wide of an onrushing Valcourt clipping the inside of the left upright before the ball nestled inside the opposite netting for a 1-0 score.

Freitas then won his side a freekick eleven minutes before the break which was taken by Ryan but his powerful on-target shot was blocked out by Valcourt.

In the 67th minute Freitas cushioned the Lawmen 2-0 with a wonderful strike from inside the area when Williams cross from the right was miscued by Boodram landing the ball to him.

Rangers then afforded Police a third item in the 75th minute converted by Williams from the penalty spot after substitute Aaron Stewart clipped the legs of Freitas inside the area sending the midfielder to ground and forcing the match referee to point to the spot.

Boodram who rocked the crossbar in the 46th minute and forced a save out of Valcourt in the 62nd minute finally had his name on the scoresheet in the 87th minute to seal the 4-0 victory when he picked up a short pass inside the area and after two touches comfortably slotted a shot past the Rangers goalie.

It was a miserable night for Valcourt, while Police goalie Emmanuel Nurse had just one real save to make 26 minutes into the match when Bryant Constantine left his marker on the left and cutting inside to unleash a low shot from the angle.
