Connection points to youth in Goal Shield title defence

Connection points to youth in Goal Shield title defenceVeteran W Connection defender and current team captain Elijah Joseph said that a lot of faith would be put on the team’s young players when they begin their Lucozade Sport Goal Shield title defence this Friday against Caledonia AIA in the quarterfinal round.

Connection and Caledonia will duo from 8pm, with Defence Force and Tobago United against eachother in the first quarterfinal clash from 6pm at the Marvin Lee Stadium.

“We are hoping that they would step-up on the day and give their best in the quarterfinals on Friday,” Joseph said during the Launch of the 2010 Lucozade Sport Goal Shield a week ago at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Wrightson Road, Port of Spain.

In the inaugural edition of the Goal Shield tournament, last season, Connection defeated Defence Force 3-0 with a double from Dominican Republic forward Jonathon Frias(sold to Puerto Rico Islanders) and a item by forward Andre Toussaint(currently attached to Joe Public).

“We don’t have the strikers we had before,” continued the 35 year old St. Lucian. “But we have young players who have shown that they are capable of playing amongst the more experienced players, especially our young strikers.”

This season Connection coach Stuart Charles Fevrier boasts a number of teenaged talents that includes Shahdon Winchester, Joevin Jones and Kerron Cummings. They will add to former Belgium based forward Matthew Bartholomew, Hughton Hector, Andrei Pacheco, Clyde Leon, Teba McKnight and other regulars.

Connection and Caledonia met once this season in which Fevrier’s bunch suffered a 1-0 defeat in Round One Match Day Ten of the Digicel Pro League Championship.

“It’s always a challenge for W Connection against any team,” continued Joseph. “Everyone wants to beat us and I’m sure it’s going to be another challenge against Caledonia. They defeated us in our first meeting this season, so we are hoping to come back and defeat them in this meeting and go forward in defending our title.”

Quarterfinal action will continue on Saturday at the Marvin Lee Stadium with Bmobile Joe Public against North East Stars from 6pm and Ma Pau SC against San Juan Jabloteh from 8pm.
