Toyota Classic brings the top 16 clubs in one mega competitionA new logo and the top sixteen(16) clubs in Trinidad and Tobago were revealed during the launch of the 2010-2011 Toyota Classic on Tuesday morning in the Toyota Box of the Queens Park Oval in Port of Spain.

This season’s Toyota Classic consists of the ten(10) Pro League clubs(Defence Force, Caledonia AIA, Joe Public, W Connection, Ma Pau SC, San Juan Jabloteh, North East Stars, St. Ann’s Rangers, Police FC and FC SouthEnd) and the top six(6) Super League clubs after their final round(T&TEC, 1976 FC Phoenix, WASA, Joe Public, Defence Force and Stokely Vale) and kicks off on Friday 11 February with Round of 16 matches.

The tournament which debuted in 2005 boasts a ‘cream of the crop’ as the top sixteen(16) clubs do battle in a classic affair—the only competition of its kind—for the title and the winners’ prize-money of $50,000.00 and $20,000.00 for the runners-up.

The tournament runs throughout February with Round of 16 matches continued on Saturday, the quarterfinal round on Tuesday 15, the semi-final round on Friday 18 and the Final on Friday 25.

TT Pro League CEO Dexter Skeene thanked Toyota for their unwavering support for the TT Pro League’s Toyota Classic, a concept that brings together the best sixteen(16) football clubs in the country in a unique and innovative tournament that is aimed at showcasing the best players and coaches in the TT Pro League and the TTFF’s Super League.

“The fact that Toyota remains resolute in its support of this innovative competition is a clear statement of the intent on Toyota’s part,” added Skeene.

He reminded all of the current crime situation felt by Trinidad and Tobago adding, “I make no apologies for saying that if the TT Pro League did not exist, thousands of young men would have no meaningful outlet to showcase their God given talent to build positive self esteem, to be able to put bread in their families mouth, to be able to aspire for greatness and be worthy ambassadors for what is about our beloved nation.”

Prior to the launch of the official Toyota Classic logo which carries an incorporation of the Toyota and TT Pro League logos, Toyota, Marketing Officer Sean Shaffie said, “Toyota has been involved in sport from the very inception and football has been our number one desire.

“It is with this desire that we teamed up with the TT Pro League to bring about the changed culture by instilling the professional attitude in sport to prepare our potential talent to embrace the dynamism of world football.

“We believe that with the right approach many among us can reach the world stage. Toyota is about playing its part in helping those realize their dreams.

“We applaud the efforts of the TT Pro League and continue to encourage them through initiatives like these,” concluded Shaffie.

The 2010-2011 Toyota Classic will also see an integration of sport and culture, as highlighted by Skeene during his speech.

Skeene said that aligning the season calendar with that of Europe has afforded the TT Pro League the opportunity to further link culture with sport to harness and develop the talent of people in Trinidad and Tobago.

“This tournament will do just that and take advantage of visitors coming to our shores (for the Carnival) and incorporate our culture of the Soca, Calypso and Steel-pan,” he said.

The Pro League CEO promised Calypso and Soca artistes, even live steel pan during the tournament. Spectators could also walk away winners with the regular ‘dash for cash’ and giveaways throughout the tournament.
