Defending champs Joe Public bow out of Toyota Classic

Defending champs Joe Public bow out of Toyota ClassicIt was a very low-keyed exit for defending Toyota Classic champs bmobile Joe Public when they suffered a 1-0 defeat against their Super League counterpart Joe Public on Friday night at the Marvin Lee Stadium in the Round of 16.

Dorion Robinson put the hurt on his former coach Rajesh Latchoo seven minutes from time when he latched onto a long pass forward which left the senior Joe Public team defence beaten before he charged into the area and slipped a shot between the legs of goalkeeper Marvin Phillip.

Phillip along with Andre Toussaint and Hayden Tinto were the experienced players for Latchoo in his first game in charge of the Pro League Joe Public team since being appointed interim head coach two weeks ago, replacing 2009 Coach of the Year Derek King.

The Lions looked more like cubs as Latchoo was equipped with eight U18 players in his 18-man squad against a relatively older Super League outfit.

Latchoo, who is also the head coach of the Super League outfit, received warnings in the opening moments with shots at goal by Donavon Derrick, Devon King and Dorion Robinson.

The Super League had their closest effort of the opening period in the 26th minute when winger Tyrone Charles scraped the crossbar with a blistering effort from the right after he was played just inside the area by Keston Henry.

The ousted defending champs had two second half efforts with Hayden Tinto curling an effort just high of the far top corner in the 69th minute and a bicycled effort over-bar by substitute Anselm Jackson.

Joe Public(Super League) advances into the quarterfinal round to meet the winner between St. Ann’s Rangers and Police FC(which plays on Saturday from 6pm at the Larry Gomes Stadium).

In other Round of 16 clashes Caledonia defeated Super League club Stokely Vale 3-1 in the first clash of a double header at the Larry Gomes Stadium with Conrod Smith opening the scoring in the 16th minute and Ishmael Daniel netting a second half double with goals in the 70th and 76th minutes. Tyrone Manning scored the lone item for the Tobagonians in the 27th minute.

In the second clash at the Malabar venue, it was as easy for recently crowned FA Trophy champions San Juan Jabloteh against another Tobagonian Super League side 1976 FC Phoenix with the match ending in a goalless draw after regulation time.

However Jabloteh went on to win the match 4-2 on kicks from the penalty spot and advances into the quarterfinal round against W Connection, meantime Caledonia are against Ma Pau SC in the quarterfinals.

Ma Pau SC cruised to a 3-0 win over fellow Pro League outfit FC SouthEnd in the opening match of a double header at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium.

Trevin Caesar opened the scoring in the 36th minute followed by second half goals by Seon Power(74th minute) and Shandell Samuel(87th minute) to earn the Woodbrook based club’s position in the quarterfinal round.

In the second clash at the Marabella venue, W Connection whipped Super League club WASA FC 4-0 as the biggest winners on Friday.

Hughton Hector poured in a hattrick netting in the 7th, 45th and 93rd minutes while Matthew Bartholomew got one to his name in the 90th minute.

And in the second clash at the Marvin Lee Stadium a superb 61st minute free-kick by Gary Glasgow saw DIRECTV North East Stars edge Super League Champions T&TEC 1-0.

North East Stars will meet the winner between Defence Force(Pro League) and Defence Force(Super League) in the quarterfinal round.
