Jabloteh gets the better of Ma Pau on penalties

Jabloteh gets the better of Ma Pau on penaltiesAfter a keenly contested 94 minutes which ended 1-1, San Juan Jabloteh got the better of Ma Pau SC 4-2 on penalties in quarterfinal D of the Lucozade Sport Goal Shield on Friday night at the Marvin Lee Stadium.

Jabloteh had the first kick and Brazillian midfielder Ronaldo Viana made no mistake. So did Ataulla Guerra as the Terry Fenwick side controlled the score board by two goals to none after the first two kicks to later win 4-2.

Jabloteh will meet Defence Force on Saturday 7 August in the semifinals of this year’s competition thanks to a fine save by goalkeeper Cleon John on Lyndon Andrews and a miss by Curtis Gonzales in the penalty shootout.

During regulation time it was Jabloteh who held the first half advantage when utility player Noel Williams showed his cool to roll a shot into the far netting past Alejandro Figueroa in the 36th minute for a 1-0 score from Kennedy Hinkson’s cross after he was played wide by Jason Marcano.

A minute later after some neat passes inside the Ma Pau area, Marcano only managed a tame shot just wide of goal but won a corner out of it when goalkeeper Figueroa carried the ball behind the goal-line.

And five minutes before the break Marcano again failed to put power on a shot making an easy shutout by Figueroa as Jabloteh pressed the later stages of the first period.

In the 51st minute Ma Pau forward Shandell Samuel had a decent opening but fired into the side netting after breaking behind to Jabloteh defence to chest down Elton John’s freekick from the right.

But the Michael McCome coached Ma Pau pulled the scores level 1-1 in the 58th minute with a touch of class by wingback Cyd Gray who met a decent cross by Elton John to head past goalkeeper John.

Both sides created openings and some near efforts, however a winning item before the final whistle never came.

Jabloteh’s Hector Sam was inches wide from distance after turning and firing from distance with a pass from Viana in the 61st minute.

And in the 75th minute substitute forward Willis Plaza muffled a superb opportunity after receiving a decent cross by Hinkson from the right with only goalkeeper Figueroa to beat but made an easy save for the Colombian who guided the tame effort out for a corner.

On the other end Ma Pa substitute Anthony Wolfe spilled inches wide of the Jabloteh goal from a well structured freekick from the top of the area in the 82nd minute after substitute Trevin Caesar won the kick a minute after replacing Lester Peltier.

Jabloteh then followed up with a couple late misses through Cyrano Glen heading wide and in injury time Marvin Oliver failed to get enough forehead to Viana’s 23 yard free kick as he watched it out with the match decided on kicks from the spot.
